The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), due to increased concerns and pressures surrounding the use of antimicrobials in livestock, implemented a new Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) rule in June 2015.1 The result is that food animal veterinarians willnow have direct oversight of all antibiotic use in feed for prevention, control and therapy. The VFD rule followed release in December 2013 of Guidance 213,2 which outlined a 3-year plan to transition the industry away from all growth promoter use of medically important antibiotics, eliminate over-the-counter status of these medications, and establish veterinary oversight for on-farm use of therapeutic antibiotics in feed (VFD) and water (prescription).
