The evolution of the veterinary feed directive (VFD) began with the United States Food and Drug Administration's efforts to ensure appropriate use of antimicrobials provided in feeds since the 1960s. The VFD process began with the Animal Drug Availability Act (ADAA) of 1996 from which a "judicious use" policy was established in lieu of prescriptions governed by state or federal law. Within 70 days of enactment of ADAA, the first VFD, Tilmicosin (PulmotiP) was approved by FDA and was the only VFD drugin the marketplace for many years. Currently, there are three VFD drugs approved for use in swine, beef and fish. There will potentially be greater than 280 VFD labeled drugs after January 1, 2017 when FDA's judicious use of antimicrobials is fully implemented.
