Post-weaning colibacillosis is a common enteric nursery disease in swine.1,2,3 The disease is caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). ETEC colonizes the intestine, and upon attachment to enterocytes, produces heat labile (LT) and heat-stable (STa and STb) enterotoxins. These enterotoxins trigger intracellular signaling pathways inducing massive fluid secretion leading to a secretory diarrhea. There are numerous strains of E. coli that may cause post-weaning colibacillosis. The most commonpost-weaning ETEC strains containing fimbria! (pili) adhesins K88 (F4) and F18 are listed in Table 1 below.
