Current Status of Canine Parvovirus-2 Genetic Variants in the USA (2015)

Canine parvovirus (CPV-2) is the most clinically significant virus pathogen of dogs. In spite of the availability of effective commercial vaccines, CPV-2 continues to be a problem in the USA and other countries, worldwide. Properties of parvovirus make them an ideal pathogen of dogs. All parvoviruses have a single-stranded DNA genome that allows a very high rate of mutation. Parvoviruses are non-enveloped and highly stable in environment allowing high levels of contamination and infectivity for longtime. CPV-2 can multiple productively in the rapidly dividing cells of the intestinal crypts and also in the basal layer of the tongue epithelium.
