Leukoreduction: Disadvantages from the Perspective of the Blood Bank

Universal leukoreduction of blood products is performed in most industrialized countries except the United States. Historical debate regarding the advantages and disadvantages of leukoreduction for blood products has been well documented in the humantransfusion literature. With the progression of veterinary transfusion medicine and hematology, the question of leukoreduction has been raised. While the advantage of leukoreduction is well documented, there are significant reasons why this practice is not recommended in the veterinary blood banking community. Simply stated, leukoreduction requires additional cost and the logistics of processing blood products with existing closed system devices are difficult.
