Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Complications and Comorbidities

Subgroups of dogs and cats, diagnosed correctly with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), will fail to respond to standard therapies. Screening for established complications and comorbidities is useful in predicting response to therapy, modifying dietaryand medical therapies and predicting outcome. Although similarities have been noted between human, canine and feline IBD, complications noted in humans, including intestinal fistulae, strictures, intramural abscessation, intestinal obstruction and intestinal perforation, are rare in dogs and cats. Ensuring the accuracy of the IBD diagnosis is paramount; however will not be reviewed in this talk.
