Carbon release of rice straw as solid organic carbon source in artificial seawater

Treatment of low C/N ratio wastewater has drawn many researchers' attention to look for an efficient and economical way. Biological removal is considered to be the most appropriate method. While low C/N ratio wastewater could not provide sufficient organic carbon to fuel denitrification, many scholars focus on biomass materials as solid organic carbon source. In this study, the heavy metals concentration, main nutrients composition and morphology of rice straw were analyzed. Then the carbon release of rice straw in artificial seawater was studied. The results showed that rice straw contained organic carbon about 56.53%, and had a porous structure. The carbon release of rice straw indicated that the TOC concentration of all batches raised quickly during the first four days, and then increased stably from 18d to 46d. When the rice straw particle size was 100 mesh and the solid-liquid ratio was 8 mg/mL (S3R4), the releasing velocity reached 3.00 mg/(Ld). Rice straw could be used as a security organic carbon source for denitrification.
