There are many corrosive species in refinery feed stocks that contribute to material corrosion. Sulfur compounds are amongst those species and are responsible for many material degradation processes particularly the so called high temperature sulfidation. The mechanism is described as thermal dissociation of sulfur compounds producing hydrogen sulfide gas that reacts with metal to form metal sulfide. The degree of the corrosiveness depends on specific types of sulfur compounds known as active sulfur. These dissociate at specific temperatures producing hydrogen sulfide1). To isolate and identify these species it is important to carry out scientific investigation in order to find out their spectrum which will help in predicting their impact on plant integrity.
