Brain expression profiling studies of suicide and depression using oligonucleotide microarrays have often failed to separate genes and molecular pathways contributing to these two phenotypes and have ignored aggressive traits which are associated with both early onset mood disorders and suicide. In addition, microarrays have a limited dynamic range of detection due to both background and saturation of signal, while next generation sequencing (NGS) approaches are more accurate in quantifying gene expression, particularly for low or high expression genes.
