Fibrosarcoma in a Captive Siberian Tiger

A 13-year-old male, intact Siberian Tiger that was captivity bred was examined for a mass on the right lateral thigh in August of 2013. The mass was first thought to have been noted approximately one month prior. There had been no previous history ofhealth problems. The mass was firm yet freely moveable from underlying tissue. Veterinarians on staff removed the mass and it was sent off for histological analysis. It returned as fibrosarcoma. The decision was made to monitor the site. Recurrence and resection of the mass was noted one month later and again in October 2013. Due to the regrowth despite the surgical intervention of the vet on staff at the zoo, they sought out surgery to be performed by a board certified surgeon to get aggressive margins. Surgery was performed December 20th, 2013 and the biopsy showed once again a fibrosarcoma - grade 2. After consideration and consultation, the veterinarians in charge of the tiger's care wanted to pursue adjuvant therapy to potentially negate any systemic disease or recurrence at site. Dual therapy was chosen of Adriamycin and Carboplatin alternating every four weeks for six treatments total. Dosing of Adriamycin would be 30mg/m~2 diluted intravenously over 30 minutes with diphenhydramine dosed at 1.5mg/ kg intramuscularly. Carboplatin dosing would be 180mg/m~2 intravenously. The treatments would occur at the zoo in the tiger's habitat/ enclosure. Blood work (CBC/Serum biochemistry) performed approximately 3 weeks prior to the first administration was within normal limits. Urinalysis was not performed at that time, and thoracic radiographs/abdominal ultrasound was not performed. The patient's treatments would occur at the four-week intervals based on the knowledge that domestic felines treated withCarboplatin nadir approximately 14-21 days after administration. We also wanted to get a urine sample to check specific gravity and submit for urinalysis prior to administering Carboplatin due to its effects on the renal system.
