An empirical analysis of relationship between environmental protection and economic development in China

Can economic development and environmental protection promote each other to mutually develop? Environmental and economic data from 1991 to 2011 in China is selected to perform metrology inspection of the causal relationship between economic development and environmental protection. Through Granger causality test, it is found that China's GDP growth will lead to increase of waste gas and waste water emissions and destroy the environment; the increase of waste gas emission will promote the growth of GDP; the increase of waste water emission is not associated with growth of GDP. The results of test show that it cannot take an account of both economic development and environmental protection in extensive mode of economic growth in China.
