A critical factor limiting precision length measurement is insufficient temperature stabilisation, significant temperature gradients or heat introduction in precision engineering and measurement instrumentation. In the EURAMET Joint Research Project IND13 researchers from National Metrological Institutes from Germany (PTB), France (LNE), Great Britain (NPL), the Netherlands (VSL) and research institutes like TU llmenau (Germany), Ecole Nationale Superieure de Mecanique et d'Aerotechnique (France) and Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (Germany) are working together on improvements in this research field [1].
