The formation mechanisms of paramagnetic centers originating from Zr~(3+) and Cr~(5+) ions and the influence of the nanoparticle composition on thermal generation processes of these paramagnetic centers were studied in ZrO_2 structure by electron paramagnetic resonance. A set of nanosized zirconium oxide powders (nominally pure ZrO_2, ZrO_2 doped with correspondingly Y_2O_3 and Sc_2O_3, Cr_2O_3 and Y_2O_3, as well as Cr_2O_3) was investigated. Annealing effects on the EPR lines of Zr~(3+) and Cr~(5+) ions were found to be different. Annealing curves of EPR signals caused by Cr~(5+) ions have a maximum in temperature range 500–600°C. Mechanisms of Zr~(3+) and Cr~(5+) ions formation were discussed.
