For the purpose of investigating the effect of surface roughness on friction, this research had used both of experiments and computer simulation with based on Matsumoto formula. The experiments were conducted under rolling-sliding condition in order to evaluate accuracy of the formula, and data was divided by shape of the roughness profile. By data analyzing, it can be seen maximum height of surface roughness effect to friction coefficient under mixed lubrication condition and the reliability of Matsumoto formula is confirmed. Also it was found that, under the rolling-sliding condition, the contact can also occur on envelope line of the profile which nearly sin wave shape and Ra/Rz ≈0.30-0.31. However, the simulation is based on basic mathematics therefore it is necessary to develop this program to be more realistic.
