Currently used effectively hydroxyurea (HU) to treat sickle cell anemia. It is know that HU enhanced hydration of red blood cells (RBC) and attenuates the polymerization of Hb S, changing the density of the erythrocyte. Our purpose was to assess the influence of HU on the RBC in patients with such treatment, using proton magnetic relaxa-tion. We performed a transverse study of the distribution of RBC separated in discontinuous percoll buffer phosphate saline gradients. Six controls were selected and 52 adult patients asymptomatic in in steady state (16 patients with treatment). Characterized the formation of RBC profiles according to their density and proton relaxation time spin-spin (T2) at 36 °C and 4 MHz. In the patients decreased density values and quantities of profiles (approximating distribution controls), the distribution of RBC less heterogeneous. In addition, the initial values of T2_(inic) and the delay time of polymerization of hemoglobin S, are significantly higher than those for patients without treatment. These results demonstrate the influence of HU on the increase in cellular hydration and thus the improvement of the patient.
