Fatigue Performance of Stainless Steel Pin-Reinforced Composite Single-Lap Joints in a Hygrothermal Environment Condition

Application of the composite material has been extended to various fields and the method of joining composite structures is changing from mechanical joints to the adhesive joints [1,2]. The cocuring of adhesive joining methods results in a relatively high joining strength, and can reduce the manufacturing cost [3]. The z-p inning method among various methods has been actively studied to reinforce to through-thickness strength [4]. Actual structures are commonly exposed to hygrothermal environments during the operation. Existing studies on the z-pinning method, however, have been primarily confined to fatigue properties under room temperature conditions. In this study, we studied the fatigue properties of composite single-lap joints reinforced by stainless steel pins after exposure to various temperature and humidity environments. Three environmental conditions were tested. From the test results, we evaluated the fatigue strength through S-N curves.
