In anaesthesia, when a closed low flow breathing circuit is used, mixtures of alkali hydroxides are employed as absorbents of the carbon dioxide. However, under dry conditions high temperatures are attained making volatile anesthetics to undergo degradation to harmful, nephro and neurotoxic compounds [1]. Also, the exhausted canisters are contaminated hospital waste, dangerous and expensive to treat, and cross-contamination with pathogens may occur. Using hollow fiber membrane contactors is a promising alternative to conventional techniques for carbon dioxide absorption from breathing circuits.
