Operational performances of state of the art PVDF hollow fiber membrane based on the stretching technology for surface water treatment

There are many different kinds of polymeric materials which can be used for membrane preparation. Currently PVDF membrane has been most widely used for water and waste water treatment due to its high chemical resistance. Conventionally PVDF membrane can be fabricated by using NIPS(non-solvent induced phase separation) and TIPS(thermally induced phase separation) process. The membranes manufactured by the above methods can have very good permeabilities, while they do not show satisfied mechanical strength if there are no inner-braided support layers. Recently developed PVDF hollow fiber membrane, based on the stretching technology, from ECONITY shows much improved tensile strength and flux over the other two membranes by NIPS and TIPS. It's expected that the membranes will be able to be operated at much higher flux with robust mechanical cleaning even in summer season showing high turbidity. The surface and cross-sectional images of new membrane for the research are presented in Fig. 1.
