The fast growing aquaculture industry has a strong need for alternative feed ingredients, because of a nearly constant supply but rising demand for fish meal as the former main protein source in most fish feeds (FAO 2010). Plant proteins seem to act as most viable alternative protein source in fish nutrition. But various antinutritional factors (ANF) present in plant products reduce its effective utilization. Phytic acid is one of the most common ANF, which is present in cereals, legumes and oil seeds. Especially in rapeseed, the phytic acid content is comparably high. Higher dietary phytic acid contents negatively affect nutrient digestibility and availability and thus influencing growth and health performance of fish. To counteract these, the supplementation of enzyme phytase seems like an adequate solution (Francis et al. 2001). In this study effects of various enzyme phytase treatments on digestibility and growth performance of turbot by plant protein based diets were investigated.
