Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a worldwide concern due to the known acute, sub-acute, and chronic impacts on both humans and aquatic environments, the severe economic losses due to impacts on aquaculture, tourism, recreation industries, and allocation to monitoring and management programs. HABs incidences have been increasing in occurrence, diversity, and severity. Several factors will likely contribute to the further worldwide increase in HABs blooms including global climate change, the utilization of coastal waters, and aquaculture practices.
