JUVENILE PRODUCTION OF PIKEPERCH (Sander lucioperca L.) UNDER POND CONDITIONS - EXPERIENCE FOR THREE YEARS

The pikeperch with delicate flesh (Policar et al., 2011) and attractiveness as a game fish (Pivnicka and Rybar, 2001) is among the most valuable freshwater fish in Europe and highly sought by the European market (Setala et al., 2008). Unfortunately, pikeperch catches are drastically decreasing in Europe (mainly in Estonia and Russia) due to overfishing and the decline of wild stock (Miiller-Belecke and Zienert, 2008). Therefore, pikeperch aquaculture has been developed in different European countriesduring the past 15 years. Larval and juvenile culture is the most important phase of pikeperch farming. Pond culture of pikeperch larvae and juveniles can be very effective methods for stable, profitable and high quality juvenile production which can beused form next pond or intensive pikeperch culture (Policar et al., 2011). The aim of our study was the optimization of pond juvenile pikeperch culture with observation of food supply and establishment of optimal harvesting term.
