After decades of persecution, protection by law, steady supply with food, provided by carp ponds, and increasing water quality resulted in a substantial recovery of otter {Lutra lutra) populations in Austrian carp pond areas. Consequently carp breeders had to meet with increasing losses caused by otter. Inevitably a conflict between carp pond farming and protection of otters arose.
