In this contribution, we present a simplified chemical transport model which allows the reconstruction of time-dependent three-dimensional concentration fields together with their sources and sinks. The solution of the arising inverse problem is solved using the finite element method. In the second part of the paper, we consider the concepts of adaptivity. The underlying theoretical framework is that of the Dual Weighted Residual (DWR) method for goal-oriented error estimation. On this basis, a posteriori error estimates are used to balance the error contributions due to the temporal and spatial discretizations. The presented model and the adaptivity is demonstrated in test cases.
