REAL WEBSITE DESIGN FOR REAL PEOPLE

In the world of computer access for blind and partially sighted people there are three main user groups: blind and partially sighted people together with those with some degree of impaired vision. They all experience problems with websites - most of which can be easily fixed. Guidelines exist that tackle such problems, but very often they are aimed at professionals, and are frequently, ironically, difficult to use. Sue King at iSys, RNIB has developed a website to increase awareness and encourage the non-professional developer, to design sites with accessibility in mind. The site, Access Wise, is effective, easy to use and appealing. It focuses on real people, using photographs and sound files to enable real understanding of how blind and partially sighted people experience websites and how small adjustments can improve their experience.
