Inspection is an important part of quality control in industry. One of the many factors that affect inspection performance is noise. Several broad characteristics of how noise affects visual search performance have been discovered over the years. The context of this study is to focus in more detail on the effects of one particular type of noise. This study looked at the effects of continuous, intermittent, random, and no noise conditions on the accuracy of an inspector performing a visual search task. The study was conducted using eight subjects on a simulated inspection task with both an easy search and a difficult search task imbedded in each trial. Each trial was performed under the varied noise patterns. Random and intermittent noise patterns were shown to have an effect on the accuracy of the inspectors performing an easy search task. There was not an effect due to the noise patterns on the difficult search task.
