Rising to the Challenges and Opportunities in Providing Decision Support Capabilities in Healthcare ... With an Industrial Engineering Influence

This paper describes the services of a Decision Support function for the largest not for profit healthcare organization within the state of Oklahoma. The decision support needs of the organization and the services provided by the Decision Support function to meet these needs are described. Challenges faced in delivering each service are discussed, as well as the competencies and associated tools and techniques required for overcoming these challenges. Critical technical & analytical and people knowledge and competencies for individuals who are interested in working within a healthcare decision support function are identified. A recommendation is made for the industrial engineering curriculum to include an appropriate balance of both technical & analytical and people oriented educational experiences in order to produce a win-win situation for healthcare and the industrial engineering profession.
