The interest for Er{sup}(3+) doped crystals lies in their possible use as active media of infrared lasers for several application fields, including medicine and telecommunication. The Er{sup}(3+) ions have demonstrated laser action at 1.5 and 3μm in a wide variety of host crystals pumped with flash lamps or lasers, and operating at various temperatures including 300K.
