Short bit-to-bend (SBTB) drilling motors are desirable for their increase in drilling performance andreliability. A SBTB drilling motor is usually achieved by reducing the side loading capability, torquecapacity, or thrust capabilities of the drilling motor. The new SBTB technology allows directional drillersto use high-torque power sections and maintain the same weight-on-bit (WOB) parameters. Lower bendsettings on a SBTB reduce the stress on housings and will achieve the same build-up rate (BUR) as aconventional drilling motor. These features reduce costs, improve performance, and enable drilling timesavings.
