As part of NASA's NextSTEP-2 Appendix E: Human Landing System Studies, Risk Reduction, Development, and Demonstration contract Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR) conducted a trade study for the Transfer Vehicle Element (TVE) and performed three Design Analysis Cycles (DACs) of the TVE design. This paper presents an overview of the trade study and the results of the three DACs. The Transfer Vehicle Element Trade Study section first presents an overview, the trade matrix, and the groundrules and assumptions. Then the Utility Analysis that was used as the decision criteria is presented including the decision attributes, the resulting utility factors, and their baseline weightings. The results using the Utility Analysis is then presented along with an examination of the influence of changing the weightings of the decision attributes. This is followed by an additional analysis using Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis to examine the robustness of the results when uncertainty is added to the input variables. Overall observations of the trade study are presented. The approach used in the Design Analysis Cycles was to examine extensibility. Thus the Design Analysis Cycles starts with a design using a pressure fed storable engine (DAC-1), followed by a design using a pump fed storable engine (DAC-2), and then two designs using cryogenic pump fed engines - LOX/H2 and LOX/CH4 (DAC-3). The requirements are first shown and then the details of the three Design Analysis Cycle Transfer Vehicle Element designs are shown.
