A Review on Nano Material Based Drug Delivery for Burn Injury

Over 300, 000 deaths occur annually due to fire-related bum injuries. Infection at the wound site is the one of the major root cause for the mortality rate. Bum injury has devastating consequence on the victims with lifetime morbidity. Therapeutic agents are delivered at the site by topical wound dressings to prevent infection and accelerate healing. The choice of the drug delivery vehicle depends on the degree of damage to the skin. This review addresses the etiology, pathophysiology and infection of burn wound. Major emphasize is laid on the nano strategies for the delivery of drugs, fabrication of silver containing nano dressings, scaffolds for the delivery of fibroblasts, keratinocytes, growth factors, and tissue engineered skin substitutes for wound therapy. An overview of 3D printing in burn wound therapy is also considered briefly.
