A wire-arc additive manufacturing machine was developed for testing forced cooling spray of water on samples printed from ER70S-6 steel wire on a mild steel substrate. Tests show a significant increase in hardness and the average uniaxial tensile strength of the as-printed material increased from 554 MPa to 1064 MPa with no post-processing treatment. Optical microscopy indicates a transition from pearlite and ferrite to lath martensite with forced cooling.
