Economic Performance of Different Paddy Storage Technologies in Bangladesh

ab:Traditional storage technologies like Dole, Motka, and Plastic bag have been practiced for rice storage in Bangladesh. Recently, some modern storage technologies like hermetic bag (HB) GrainPro and PICS bags are suggestedfor rice storage without being subjected to trials and economic analysis in the country. Very few empirical studies on economic analysis of storage technologies were done at laboratory and field condition. In this paper, losses of rice storage using different technologies both traditional and modern were evaluated to judge the economic effectiveness of these technologies. Furthermore, determinants of storage benefit were analyzed using financial analytical tools for different devices and econometric modeling was formulated to have the understanding the benefit of reduced loss by storage over time. The main objectives were to identify the amount of losses due to storage that popular technology could reduce. These benefits were found increasing with time meaning that a farmer gained more benefit by storing longer period in hermetic bag. Results showed that economically feasible and attractive in investing these technologies at a discount rate of 12 percent by using financial analytical tools like net present value and benefit cost ratio (BCR) of different storage technologies. The results also indicate that gain of storage clearly increased over time. Considering benefit cost ratio (BCR), Plastic Bag use in rice storage is the most profitable storage technology followed by GrainPro and PICS Bag, respectively. Farmers gain more benefit using PICS Bag followed by GrainPro Bag and Plastic Bag within a year. PICS bag provides highest gains accounted BDT 61,000/ton/year and abates 8.73 percent losses in seed storage. Regression analysis of treatment and time effect ofstorage suggested that, percentage profit per month is 4.63 percent for the control, 8.19 percent for PICS bag, 7.60 percent for GrainPro bag, 5.01 percent for Plastic bag, and 6.57 percent for Dole. Finally it impliedthat promotion of PICS Bag in rice seed storage would be more cost-effective and economically feasible to farmer.
