IMPLEMENTING A BACK BARRIER MARSH CREATION PROJECT UTILIZING THE CPRA MARSH CREATION DESIGN GUIDELINES

As part of the Louisiana Coastal Protection Restoration Authority’s (CPRA) mandate, the CPRA has oversight over all matters relating to the study, planning, engineering, design, and construction of integrated coastal protection and restoration projects within the Louisiana Coastal Zone (LCZ). For decades, the state of Louisiana has successfully designed and implemented marsh creation and back barrier marsh creation projects to restore degrading coastal marsh habitat. Typically, the design of marsh creation projects relied on past project information with limited written guidance for the designer. The CPRA Marsh Creation Design Guidelines (MCDG1.0) were developed by the CPRA Engineering Division based on past project implementation experience to serve as the minimum design standard consistent with sound engineering practices for those engaged in designing and constructing marsh creation projects within the LCZ, and to support the implementation of Louisiana’s Comprehensive Master Plan for a Sustainable Coast (Master Plan).
