Valuable Ideas Program at the Penasquito Mine

Since 2016, the people who live in the 25 communities surrounding Penasquito's Goldcorp mine want to develop their micro businesses. Looking to commit to that objective, the company approached NGO “Technoserve” in order to develop a program focused on the development and improvement of existing and new microbusinesses. Through this program, the company has developed 130 micro businesses so far. Fifty-six students have already graduated from the program and are today working, and 73 of them are in the process of training. Some examples of the businesses developed are products and services, such as bakeries, butcheries, boutiques, barber shops, mini markets, restaurants, etc. In addition, agriculture and cattle productive projects have been developed.The program has delivered more than one successful case. Today, there are different businesses such as restaurants, bakeries and mechanical workshops that sell their services to the mine, its contractors and the community in general. In addition, along with Technoserve, an aftercare program has been developed, in which microbusinesses with potential to be Penasquito's local suppliers are developed. To date, 23 businesses are in this training process. The microbusinesses participating in the program have increased their sales, improved their management, the quality of their service, they have enhanced their processes and advanced in the compliance with the local health and administrative regulation. They have also generated direct employment and contracts with contractors from the Penasquito mine. It is worth mentioning that 63 % of the entrepreneurs in the program are women. Nine of the existing businesses have increased their sales by over 200 %.
