A ferrofluid is a fluid with magnetic properties, i.e. it is attracted by a magnet (FIGURE 1). This fluid can be used as a lubricant in different types of bearings. The ferrofluid bearing in general distinguishes itself by its simplicity, low cost, inherent stability, low friction, complete absence of stick slip and viscous like damping. These characteristics makes it a potentially low cost alternative for systems with an air bearing or magnetic bearing to achieve similar specifications. A vacuum compatible fluid ensures the long lifetime of the seal due to its low vapor pressure.
