The present paper describes a geometrical model for analyzing tooth meshing in strain-wave gearings. In the model, the circle of a flex gear at a referred diameter is assumed to become an ellipse whose circumference is equal to that of the original circle after an elliptic cam deforming the flex gear. Besides, each tooth of a flex gear changes the direction of its centerline from the radial one to the normal to the ellipse. The proposed model enabled the conjugate tooth of a circular spline to a flex-gear tooth to be calculated. Discussions showed that involute gears with a smaller addendum and dedendum and larger pressure angle could be applied to a flex gear in strain-wave gearings and involute flex gears could have a wide contact region along the tooth profile with the conjugate circular spline.
