Communication in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is dependent upon neighboring nodes and battery power of the operating node. Factors like neighbor availability, link stability, energy and route failures directly influence network performance, for which optimization is vital. Traditional optimization techniques advise solutions that consume higher number of iterations without considering post network metrics. To address the sub-optimal results and pre convergence issues of the existing methods, we put forward an innovative Distance and Energy Aware Optimized Routing (DEA-OR) algorithm for WSNs. DEA-OR addresses issues in energy efficient transmission and route failures considering distance as the base factor. The process is of twofold: weight based neighbor selection and cost incarcerated greedy method to address route failures. In this process, backtracking of source is prevented and overhead in neighbor selection is minimized. Our proposed algorithm improves throughput, network lifetime, minimizes energy consumption, delay and overhead.
