Accurate fault location is of great significance to ensure the stability of power supply. In this paper, a new fault location method by injecting two high voltage pulses with opposite phase and same pulse width into the line is proposed. By analyzing the propagation characteristics of traveling wave signals on normal lines and fault points, it is theoretically explained that the first voltage traveling wave detected at the non-injected phase comes from the traveling wave reflection at the fault point. VMD (variational mode decomposition) and TEO(Teager operator) are used to extract the arrival time of the wavefront, then the fault location is calculated. Simulation in PSCAD verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the existing methods, the location results obtained by the proposed method are more accurate.
