Overall automotive industry trends focus on CO_2 reduction, material reduction and electrification amongst other aspects. OEMs therefore strive, for example, for lightweight solutions with regard to car design, leading to a switch from metal solutions to lighter-weighing plastic solutions. The drive towards use of lighter-weight materials has also been translated into Sun Roof Frame (SRF) system developments. Generally spoken the SRF needs to be integrated in the body-in-white (BIW) in a such a way that the requirements of overall car performance are still being met. Besides lightweighting it is important to optimize every step throughout production and utilization to close the loop(s) while still retaining value and re-using materials. In this lecture, we will share our thoughts on lightweight solutions for future mobility.
