The increasing use of petrochemical plastics across industries poses a major challenge with regard to the carbon footprint and the utilization of waste products. To get a deeper understanding of what sustainable materials are, the meaning of the term sustainability will be explained which was originally established by Carlowitz for a form of forestry and expanded in the 20th century into other fields. From a material scientific point of view, this means the necessity of researching environmentally compatible resources and material concepts, the definition of which is particularly oriented in the automotive sector on the basis of their production, service life and utilization.
