Why study communication styles and core skills? The primary goal is improved clinical outcomes. Secondary goals include lower stress workplaces, higher performing teams, and more satisfied clients and coworkers. In this section we will focus on learning and communication styles, starting with self-awareness and then how to flex your style to meet the needs of others. Effective delivery of information varies depending on individual preferences about how to receive information. For example, learning styles may be auditory, visual, written, kinesthetic, big-picture of detail oriented, and may vary by personality style. Current understanding indicates that most people learn through multiple channels, with variable efficacy. As individuals, we all have preferred ("natural") communication styles. In the healthcare setting styles may vary by individual preference and by the type of situation encountered. By being aware of our own style preferences, we can become more adept at flexing our styles to meet the client and situational needs.
