摘要

Literature on veterinary mental health in the past decade predominantly has focused on risk factors for suicide, burnout, and mental illness [1-9]. The health care professions (including veterinary medicine) continue to rank relatively highly in suicide deaths by occupation, according to a 2018 report from the CDC, which analyzed data from 2012 and 2015 [10,11]. This was supported by a 2018 study by Tomasi et at., which showed that proportional mortality ratio for suicide among veterinarians was higher compared to the general U.S. population, and female veterinarians across clinical and non-clinical veterinary roles were on average 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide compared to the general U.S. population [12]. As a result of these data, many have attempted to determine causal associations of suicide, burnout, and mental illness in veterinary medicine, including several studies that have explored possible risk factors for mental ill-health in students [3-6]. While data on veterinary students may not be generalizable to the graduate population, these studies examine possible mental health trends early in the careers of veterinarians [3-6]. Together, these data demonstrate a need for further research in mental health in veterinary medicine andpossible strategies for prevention of mental illness.
