Future Improvements to Combat Aircraft Simulation Training: MTDS as means for more realism

The focus of this paper is to point out expected changes to training demands for Combat Aircraft pilots in the future and how they will affect the training in simulators. In the introduction the expected changes to the training shall be explained from a customer's viewpoint based on the current developments in Gen4 and Gen5 Combat Aircraft programs and the overall military and technical situation. The main part starts with the explanation for the improved usage of simulators and simulation in the military training and how this training "naturally" evolves towards networking. The paper then focuses on the necessary improvements within the network infrastructure (national and multinational). The evaluation of the simulation technology will focus on two most important training areas for networked simulation within the air picture: Communication and Electronic Warfare. This evaluation is based on experiences gained during the training exercises performed as part of the NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (MSG) 128 task group "Incremental implementation of NATO Mission Training through Distributed simulation". The paper will finish with an overall evaluation of the current status of this kind of training and an outlook for the near future.
