Active fault is one of the major problems in engineering geology research. The ground ruptures generated by the activity of the faults are great hazards to the projects. The location and activity of active fractures have a major impact on the site selection of railways, highways, water conservancy, and hydropower projects. During the construction of a certain railway, the author studied the activities of the faults distributed across the entire line, and conducted a deep research on the Zhongtiaoshan north piedmont fault (ZNPF), which has significant influence on the project. Based on the data collectiong and efield investigation, together with the remote sensing, geophysical prospecting, drilling, trenching, and other methods, the location and activity of ZNPF is determined. The potential zone influenced by active fault is evaluated, based on which the suitable engineering measures are adopted crossing the whole active faults.
