The Nine Springs wastewater treatment plant is carbon limited and must define how to cost effectively reduce effluent total nitrogen discharges while also reducing operating costs. A traditional University of Cape Town (UCT) flow scheme was compared to three short-cut nitrogen alternatives. The UCT and main stream nitrite shunt alternatives capital costs were similar as the UCT additional mixed liquor recycle pumping systems costs were roughly equal to the additional clarifier costs required to address decreased sludge quality with nitrite shunt. Nitrite shunt annual operating costs are $2 million less than the UCT due to lower blower energy demands and lack of supplemental carbon addition making it the most cost-effective and sustainable solution.
