We have completed a series of experiments to study the ability of embedded electromagnetic particle velocity gauges to characterize multi-dimensional reactive flows. To this aim, a specific setup was developed to provide steady detonations with various levels of curvature by changing the dimensions and the nature of the explosive samples. Our results clearly show that the curvature has a pronounced effect on the response of the gauge but it is still possible to extract valuable information from the gauge records by taking into account the curvature in the analysis process. These results led us to design a new specific gauge for curved detonation front characterization, consisting only of shock trackers aligned on the same reference line. These new gauges have been successfully tested in both initiation and steady detonation conditions. In this work, we also present a new theoretical method to assess the response of the gauges in multi-dimensional reactive flows which appears to be a very effective way to check the predictions of various reactive burn models in multi-dimensional flows.
