A comprehensive district heating and cooling (DHC) system design is presented. Large-scale ground sourceheat pump (GSHP) with thermal energy storage system is applied in the DHC system. Normally, thecompressor of a ground source heat pump works at a very wide range of compression ratios, and thus theannually overall performance is comparatively low. Through simulation evaluation, the annual cooling andheating performance of the ground source heat pump is enhanced by increasing the mean temperature of theground and thus narrowing the work range of compression ratios. The hourly operation strategy of the heatpumps and thermal storage system is proposed to decrease the energy cost and match the tiered pricing ofpower consumption. In addition, heat pumps always work near the maximum efficiency point by utilizing thecoordinated thermal energy storage system.
