Investigative study for the application of modal analysis in the context of electric power quality

The presence of harmonic components in the electric power system has as one of its main consequences the possibility of excitation of the harmonic resonance. According to the theory of Harmonic Resonance Mode Analysis (HRMA), the parallel resonance is closely related to the singularity of the network admittance matrix. Thus, the smallest magnitude of the eigenvalue determines the harmonic resonance mode. This article applies the HRMA theory with the objective of conducting an investigative study in the context of monitoring the power quality. Four cases were used, which were adapted from a 3 bus test system. These adaptations were carried out in order to verify the conclusions already reported in the literature and to reaffirm the potential of the proposed method in the monitoring of harmonic resonance conditions. Based on the presented results, it was possible to understand how the harmonic resonance propagates throughout the system and which node contains the greatest possibility of harmonic resonance condition.
