Computer-aided teaching tools have turned out to be an indispensable element of both classroom lectures and laboratory experiments. This paper presents the utilization of LabVIEW (Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench) in the dynamic simulation of electrical machines, specifically the transient characteristics of a pole salient synchronous generator, modelling on dq-coordinates. The example presented in the paper illustrates how LabVIEW software can be applied to simplify some of the steady-state characteristics of the three-phase salient pole synchronous generator. This simulation technique also reduces the system complexity from a developer's standpoint, and thus allows the researchers to concentrate on the application details. Such improvements are not available in the traditional means of measurement techniques and tools. Simulation results are encouraging and indicate that the proposed simulation model is closer to the physical simulation.
