Fleet management system (FMS) is a term for an application to manage and monitor of fleet-related applications such as transportation, logistics, and distribution. When the fleet in an FMS goes into a massive number, a lightweight IoT protocol is needed for better system response and operational cost. The most common protocol that widely used and developed nowadays is HTTP or REST and MQTT. HTTP or REST relies on the physical location of the device, which presents complexity of the network control and less efficient because of its protocol overhead. MQTT protocol is presented to handle the issues that happened in HTTP or REST. In this study, the comparison between this two protocol will be presented in term of data latency. In the experiments, GPS is used as an input for data transmission. These data will be processed by ARM Cortex-M4 based microcontroller to transmit the data from the sensor to the server using MQTT and REST protocol within different experiment time. The server act as a receiver and the result was displayed in the PC serial monitor. At the end of the experiment, the results are MQTT was obtained to be more suitable because of its low latency compared to HTTP.
